Hiking in Flachau to Grießenkareck mountain
When guests ask us about a hike that should be done in Flachau, we say: Off to our local mountain.
The tour to Grießenkareck is one of the most beautiful tours in Flachau and is also suitable for less experienced hikers.
The view from the summit is magnificent, the landscape along the way is wonderfully beautiful, and the starting point is practically right in front of the hotel door.
With the Starjet cable cars (5 minutes by car from Hotel loj) it is comfortably possible to go from the town center of Flachau up to about 1,750 meters above sea level before starting the hike at the mountain station and the mountain inn Latschenhof.
From there, the path initially leads over a forest road and then over a well-established hiking trail towards the summit. We particularly love this tour in early summer: Then blooming alpine roses color the slopes pink, and the entire alpine region shows itself from its most beautiful side.
In about 30 minutes and after approximately 295 meters of elevation gain, you reach the Grießenkareck. Once at the top, a dreamlike 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains of Salzburg land awaits you. And from here, ambitious hikers will also discover the next destination: the Saukarfunktel.
If at this point you have already accumulated enough elevation gain, you can choose the return path to the mountain station over the Saukarriedel and will be back at the starting point after a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Our personal recommendation for ambitious hikers is the extension to Saukarfunktel at 2,028 meters above sea level.
Like a small rock pyramid, it juts out from the landscape and offers fantastic views. Large boulders around the summit cross invite you to take a cozy break.
By the way, the Saukarfunktel owes its special name to these very rocks. During thunderstorms, lightning strikes here repeatedly, causing the stones to visibly spark.
For the return journey, you can either choose the same route or take the longer and particularly scenic round tour over the Frauenalm. This path leads along the ridge towards the south before returning via a natural trail to the Grießerkaralmen and the mountain station of Starjet 2.
For this option, you should plan around four and a half hours in total.
